Thoughts on Hattie

There is a lot of information about teaching and classroom management and student achievement. John Hattie is a leader in the field with a tremendous amount of meta data on empirical research. I am not a student of his work. I do not think I knew his name until this past week when someone posted on twitter about his research. I have only begun to scratch the surface of his work. The Glossary of affected areas seems to be a high spot and starting point for research. (http://visible-learning.org/hattie-ranking-influences-effect-sizes-learning-achievement/) I wish it had a link or a pop up for definitions on each of the areas. Some seem fuzzy for me and it may be the difference in Northern vs. Southern Hemispheres.
I did find this article with some definitions of the categories (http://www.teacherstoolbox.co.uk/T_effect_sizes.html)
I do hope I can delve in more over the next little while to get a better understanding of the data.

John Hattie
Visible Learning
Greetings Sequoyah,

John Hattie came up on Twitter earlier this week and continues to be circulating. (https://grantwiggins.wordpress.com/2012/01/07/what-works-in-education-hatties-list-of-the-greatest-effects-and-why-it-matters/) I do not know if it is I see it because I am aware of it now or if there is something happening.

One thing that gives me concern is his talk on class size (https://youtu.be/sng4p3Vsu7Y). We are at capacity as a building. What happens when we have a new building and teachers leave our site. Our numbers will drop, our staff will drop but our biggest problem of over sized classes will remain. Tragic. Really very tragic.

Gamification
Level Up - Power Up - Gotta Catch em All

Greetings Sequoyah,

Gamification in the classroom is gaining a lot of traction. Students are geared to games. Probably not a stretch for new teachers who grew up with gaming systems in the home, but more of one for those of us with first generation Pong and Breakout. Games follow a formula. They become increasingly difficult as players master skills. Specific actions produce specific results. Learning those processes is key. Gamification takes the principles of games and incorporates them into the curriculum.
Our buddy Scott Haselwood published his latest The Drive podcast on Gamification. It is a good introduction to the process and covers some of his techniques for incorporating the concepts. Give it a listen at: https://soundcloud.com/teachingfromhere/the-drive-episode-13-gamification

Greetings Sequoyah,

One of the neat features with Google is the near seamless integration of products. Take a photo or video with your phone. It is sent to the cloud. Create an entry in blogger. Embed the photo or video with ease.

For detailed instructions check out http://www.peggyktc.com/2015/10/how-to-embed-video-uploaded-to-google.html
