NY Times Photo Site
with guest editor
Greetings Sequoyah,

From Vicki Keller our guest editor today.

This is a pretty cool site that could be used in history- or other classes depending on the photo posted. I use it in publications for caption writing.

A super exercise we do is "What's Going on in This Picture?" Every Monday, a usually newish news photo is posted. They have some specific directions for what they want kids to do, including joining an online discussion about the photo, but the gist of it is students are asked to try and make sense what the photo is showing by context or other clues. On Friday, the "answer" is given about what the photo actually depicts.

HyperDoc Resource
Padlet Collection
Greetings Sequoyah,

We looked at HyperDocs (makes me think of Ron Ely hopped up on sugar for some reason) a while back. A hyperdoc is a great way to collect and share information with students. Typically created in a Google Doc is the the entire lesson plan linked together on one platform.

Someone created a great resource center of #HyperDocs on Padlet. Folks can add their own HyperDocs too.

HashTag #illiterate
Society has evolved
Greetings Sequoyah,

The twitter feed this morning posted a great quote from George Couros "if you don't know what a hashtag is, you are illiterate in this world."  Our society has evolved with technology. If we do not evolve with it we do unaware and illiterate.

Want to know where the youth are now? Take a look at PewDiePie
https://www.youtube.com/user/PewDiePie or don't really I would not.

Thanks and don't forget to be awesome,

Andy

Google Search
Advanced Search Techniques
Greetings Sequoyah,

Looking for something in google? Type it in. Usually you get what you need. How often do you even go to the next page in the list?

Have you seen the advanced search features?
Do a search for anything say, the Battle of Little Big Horn.
Click on the little gear up at the top right for advanced search.
In the file type drop down choose Microsoft PowerPoint.
This limits the search to just ppt files.
Click to download any of the PowerPoint shows.
Text, Images, References, all right there put together in a nice little presentation.
If I was a student I would never have to create another anything again.
As an aside, if you search for the Battle of Greasy Grass instead of Little Big Horn a whole different perspective of the narrative emerges.

Thanks and don't forget to be awesome,

Andy
